Renew or Replace Your Green Card (Form I-90)
Updated 2026-05-29 · General information, not legal advice.
Form I-90 is used to renew a 10-year permanent resident card that is expiring or has expired, or to replace a card that was lost, stolen, damaged, or contains incorrect information.
When to Use I-90
- Your 10-year green card is expiring (file within 6 months of expiration) or has expired
- Your card was lost, stolen, or destroyed
- Your name or other details changed, or the card has a USCIS error
When NOT to Use I-90
Do not use I-90 to remove conditions on a 2-year card — use Form I-751 instead. To become a citizen, file Form N-400 (see our citizenship test resources).
How to File
File online or by mail with USCIS, pay the fee, and attend biometrics if required. You will receive a receipt notice that can serve as temporary proof of status.
Frequently Asked Questions
My green card expired. Am I still a permanent resident?
Yes. Your status does not end when the card expires; the card is just the document. File I-90 to renew it.
Should I use I-90 to remove conditions?
No. A 2-year conditional card requires Form I-751, not I-90.
How long does I-90 take?
Processing varies; USCIS issues a receipt that extends your card's validity as proof while you wait.
